What Is CPR?

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is a lifesaving technique which is useful in many situations. One of the primary methods of helping those aspiring to obtain their CPR certifications is the acronym C.A.B. This stands for “Compressions, Airways, Breathing.”

Fast CPR Stats

Here are some quick stats about CPR:
1) Nearly 80% of sudden cardiac arrests happen at one’s home
2) Roughly 92% of victims don’t survive, and this often is due to people around the victim not taking action nor performing CPR
3) Unfortunately, many victims appear healthy with no known heart disease or other risk factors
4) According to the American Heart Association, an estimated 63% of women (and 48% of men) who die suddenly of a heart attack had no previous symptoms
5) If someone performs CPR correctly there is triple the chances that the victim can survive
6) Less than a third of cardiac arrest victims get CPR from a bystander.

Most people do not realize the difference between sudden cardiac arrest and a heart attack. Sudden cardiac arrest occurs when electrical impulses in the heart become rapid. This causes the heart suddenly to stop beating. A heart attack, on the other hand, occurs when blood supply is blocked to a part of the heart. Such a block could lead to cardiac arrest.
